IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FROM ARTINGTON QUARTET
The newly formed Artington String Quartet gave a masterly performance at their first
concert in Cockermouth, when the audience were treated to their interpretation of two
famous quartets, Mozart “Dissonance” Quartet and Smetana’s semi autobiographical
“From my Life” Quartet. Malcolm Allison(Violin) led with assurance and sensitivity
to every nuance of the music and was ably joined by Catherine Lett(Violin). The
whole group’s instinctive balance of sound united with a clear understanding of
dynamics and mood. Jonathan Hennessey-Brown (Cello) brought admirable bass
support to the group at all times and Emily Frith(Viola) was particularly impressive
in the Smetana with her solo moments which gave emotional energy to the depiction
of a master composer’s worst nightmare - the onset of deafness. The concert’s
second half was devoted to a performance of Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A
with Susan Allison (Piano), exciting and wonderful music which the audience clearly
enjoyed.
